He-Man
and the Masters of the Universe Magazine
Issue #5, Winter 1986.
In
this issue's "He-Man Mailbox," the girls are
doin' it for themselves! Letters from female He-Man
fans nearly outnumber ones from the boys! Included is
an ASCII image of Orko. "Create A Character"
descriptions include electric-eyed Catta, and machine-controlling
Cyborge. "Orko's Earth Report" makes mention
of the upcoming television event, "He-Man and She-Ra:
A Christmas Special."
Feature
Story: Into the Maze
This ambitious 6-page comic story finds Hordak stooping
to new lows: he intends to capture Prince Adam, completing
the kidnap pact that he began years ago with Princess
Adora! A message from Hordak arrives at Palace Eternia
for Adam, claiming that the Horde commander has decided
to reform. Adam is suspicious, but agrees to meet Hordak
at the Plain of the Winds to discuss this, knowing that
the wide open area has no place to conceal a trap. Fortunately,
Orko decides to follow Adam, because Hordak has had
his Hordesmen make a few structural changes to the plain.
As Adam approaches Hordak, the image, a hologram, vanishes,
and a vast circular maze erupts from the ground around
him, trapping Adam at its center! As Orko flies for
help, Adam tries to logically maneuver through the maze,
but after suffering a series of boobytrap pitfalls (falling
floors, snaring nets), decides that this is a task for
He-Man! But this maze may even be too much for He-Man
to handle! Trapped within a tiny chamber with sliding
metal walls, He-Man gets serious, and unleashes his
thunder punch! With the furious swing of one mighty
fist, a series of maze walls are shattered, and He-Man
escapes the maze. Confronting a surprised Hordak, He-Man
ensnares him in a Power Sword generated force field,
just as Orko arrives with reinforcements, Moss Man and
Sy-Klone in a Wind Raider. He-Man has Orko repair the
busted walls of Hordak's treacherous maze with his magic
(it works for once), and when the dust settles, out
walks Prince Adam! Orko does a tremendous job of covering
for He-Man in front of his friends, filling Adam in
as though he had no idea that Adam and He-Man were the
same person. Moss Man and Sy-Klone then get to do their
bit to help, and, flying overhead in the Wind Raider,
drop an enraged Hordak into the center of his own maze!
The heroic allies then head for home, as Adam comments
how aMAZEingly easy it is for someone to be trapped
by their own mistakes. <groan!>
Puzzles
and Activities
"Postage Puzzler" is a "What's Wrong"
feature, inviting you to point out some odd misprints
in the royal mailroom. A number of newly minted Eternian
postage stamps are presented, including one of Cringer
with leopard spots instead of tiger stripes, and He-Man
brandishing a Power Cane?! Maybe when he's 60! "The
Eternia Name Game" is a crossword, using pictures
of Eternian heroes, villains, and Hordesmen (including
treetrap!) rather than written descriptions. He-Man
has received "The Secret Message," but he
can't read it without your help! It is written in an
elaborate symbol code, and deciphering it is up to you!
"Cringer and the Creature" is a dot-to-dot
page. Discover why Cringer is hiding in the forest,
and who (or what) he is hiding from!
Posters
Poster #10 depicts the issue's cover scene, Stonedar
and Rokkon blasting from the sky in the midst of a meteor
shower, to confront Hordak and Leech. For a change,
this cover image doesn't crop out a person or persons
from the enlarged view. Poster #11 is an artist's rendering
of how He-Man's float will appear in the Macy's Annual
Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28, 1986! Castle
Grayskull and the Crystal Castle are depicted, separated
by an enormous dragon. He-Man, Skeletor, Hordak and
Man-At-Arms make an appearance, as do She-Ra, Catra,
and Glimmer from the Princess of Power line.
